Open Question: Why wasn’t the new or reintroduced VW Volkswagen Beetle made with air cooled engine like the earlier bug?

As above, when they started making the new beetle 10 years back or so, why not use air cooled engine like the old VW bug? Why hasn’t any carmaker used air cooled engine since then?
